This descriptive study aims to explore the students' ability in using function words among eighth-grade students at SMPN 24 Banjarmasin. The research is conducted to identify the level of students' understanding of function words in language contexts. The research method employed is a survey and quantitative data analysis. The research sample consists of randomly selected eighth-grade students. The instrument used is a written test covering various types of function words. The results indicate variation in students' ability in using function words, with some students demonstrating good understanding while others experiencing difficulties. The implications of these research findings can be used for curriculum development and more effective teaching strategies to enhance students' understanding of function words in language
